Good drinks don’t happen by accident. Here’s what goes into turning a few ingredients, a little cannabis, and a lot of experimentation into something worth cracking open.
There’s a lot that goes into a great drink before it ever finds its way into your refrigerator. The ingredients have to work together. The flavor needs to be right. The carbonation has to hit that sweet spot. And if you’re making a cannabis beverage, there’s one more rather important detail: the THC needs to be distributed consistently, so every serving delivers what the label says it does.
Easy, right? Well, not exactly.
Making a great cannabis beverage combines the creativity of craft brewing, the precision of food science, and the sort of attention to detail that doesn’t always make for exciting dinner conversation—but makes a considerable difference when you take that first sip.
At Magic Number, we’ve been figuring out how to do it right in Bend, Oregon, since 2014. Here’s a look at what happens between the original idea and the finished can.
1. It Starts With a Good Recipe
Before there’s any cannabis involved, there’s a more fundamental question: Does this actually taste good?
That might sound obvious, but it’s worth remembering that a beverage has to be delicious on its own merits. Nobody wants to drink something that tastes like a chemistry experiment just because it contains THC. Developing a recipe means thinking about the entire flavor profile. Sweetness, acidity, bitterness, spice, aroma, and the way everything comes together on your palate all matter.
Take ginger beer, for example. Ginger brings a distinctive heat and bite, but getting the balance right means more than throwing a bunch of ginger into a tank and hoping for the best. The sweetness has to complement the spice, and the acidity needs to keep everything lively rather than syrupy.
Fruit flavors present their own challenges. A drink can taste wonderful in a small sample but become cloying when served in a larger quantity. A flavor that seems bold and exciting at first might need a little more complexity to keep it interesting. And then there’s the simple matter of making something you’d actually want to drink.
At Magic Number, our roots are in craft brewing, where experimentation and recipe development are part of the fun. Finding the right formula can take plenty of tinkering, tasting, adjusting, and starting over. Sometimes the magic is in the ingredients. Sometimes it’s in what you leave out. And occasionally, it’s admitting that your first idea wasn’t nearly as brilliant as you thought it was.
2. The Ingredients Matter
A beverage is only as good as the ingredients that go into it.
That doesn’t mean every drink needs exotic fruit flown halfway around the world or a list of ingredients that requires a chemistry degree to decipher. Quite the opposite. Great beverages often start with familiar ingredients handled thoughtfully.
Fresh ginger, quality fruit ingredients, natural flavors, and pure cane sugar can all contribute to a drink with personality. The challenge is making those ingredients work together consistently. Natural ingredients can vary from batch to batch. Spices can be more assertive than expected. A recipe needs to account for those differences so the finished product remains true to its intended flavor.
For Magic Number, the commitment to natural ingredients and craft production has been part of the story since the beginning. We started small, experimented with recipes in a garage, and built a business around the idea that cannabis beverages should be enjoyable beverages first.
That philosophy still matters. Because a great THC drink shouldn’t require you to hold your nose, close your eyes, and negotiate with yourself to finish it.
3. Bringing Cannabis Into the Mix
Here’s where cannabis beverage production gets a little more interesting…
THC is fat-soluble, which means it doesn’t naturally dissolve evenly into water. That’s a significant challenge when your finished product is a mostly water-based beverage. Pouring cannabis oil into a tank of soda and giving it a good stir isn’t a reliable solution. Without the right formulation, the ingredients can separate, affecting both the consistency of the drink and the distribution of cannabinoids. This is where specialized cannabis emulsions come in.
An emulsion helps disperse cannabinoid oil throughout the liquid by breaking the oil down into micron and nano-sized particles. The emulsion has to work with the rest of the recipe, too. It can’t compromise the flavor, texture, or overall character of the drink.
Different formulations can behave differently, and the right approach depends on the ingredients, production process, and desired finished product. It’s a good example of how cannabis beverages bring two different disciplines together: the craft of making something delicious and the science of making it consistent.
The goal isn’t to make the science the star of the show…the goal is to make a drink where the science works quietly in the background, leaving you with something that tastes the way it should.
4. Getting the Dose Right
Flavor might be the first thing you notice about a beverage, but consistency is every bit as important.
With a conventional soda, you expect the first can to taste like the second. With a cannabis beverage, you also expect the THC content to match the labeled amount. That takes careful formulation, accurate measurements, thorough mixing, and appropriate quality-control procedures.
During production, manufacturers must account for the amount and concentration of the cannabis ingredient being used, the volume of the batch, and how effectively the cannabinoids are distributed throughout the finished beverage. A properly designed process helps prevent one portion of a batch from containing a different concentration than another.
Manufacturers also need to follow applicable testing requirements. In Oregon’s regulated cannabis market, required compliance testing is an important part of verifying that products meet established standards before reaching consumers…this isn’t the place for guesswork.
Accurate dosing gives consumers information they can use to make informed decisions about what and how much they consume. It also helps establish the consistency that people expect from a product they purchase repeatedly.
At Magic Number, the idea behind our name has always been that different people have different preferences and tolerances. Reliable labeling and consistent production are essential to helping consumers understand what they’re choosing.
Precision might not sound particularly glamorous, but when it comes to cannabis beverages, it’s a pretty important ingredient.
5. The Fizz, the Finish, and Everything in Between
Once the recipe and cannabis formulation come together, the rest of the beverage still has to work.
Carbonation, for example, is more than a decorative flourish. It affects how a drink feels, how its aromas are released, and how its sweetness and acidity come across. Too little fizz can leave a soda feeling flat. Too much can overwhelm the experience. The right balance gives the drink its characteristic sparkle and refreshing finish.
The beverage also needs to hold up over time. A drink that tastes fantastic immediately after production isn’t much use if its flavor, appearance, or carbonation changes before it reaches the customer. Manufacturers also have to consider stability, packaging compatibility, storage conditions, and the shelf life of the finished product. Formulations and processing methods must be appropriate for the particular beverage being made.
And, of course, the can itself has a job to do: protect the product and deliver it in a convenient, recognizable package.
Each of these details contributes to the final experience. None of them can rescue a bad recipe, but overlooking them can undermine a good one.
6. Quality Control: The Less Glamorous Side of Great Drinks
Let’s be honest. When you open a cold soda, you’re probably not thinking about batch records, production checks, or laboratory results. You’re thinking about whether it tastes good.
But getting to that moment requires work that happens well before the can reaches your hand. Quality control can include checking ingredient specifications, monitoring production conditions, verifying measurements, reviewing laboratory results, and confirming that packaging and labeling meet applicable requirements.
Cannabis products also face regulatory requirements that conventional beverages don’t. Licensed manufacturers must follow the rules that apply to their products, including applicable testing, tracking, packaging, and labeling standards. The details vary by product and jurisdiction, but the underlying principle is straightforward: a manufacturer needs reliable processes, not just a good recipe.
Quality control isn’t a single final inspection. It’s a series of checks designed to help identify problems before they become bigger problems. It’s not the most exciting part of making a beverage. Nobody is writing a rock anthem about verifying batch measurements.
But it’s one of the reasons a well-made product can deliver a dependable experience from one purchase to the next.
7. From Bend to Your Refrigerator
Magic Number began in 2014 with two founders experimenting with beverage recipes in their garage. What started as a small operation grew into Oregon’s #1 cannabis beverage business producing drinks in Bend, Oregon. That local, craft-focused foundation remains central to the brand.
Today, producing a beverage at a commercial scale requires balancing creativity with repeatable processes. Recipes need to be consistent. Ingredients need to be managed carefully. Production and quality-control procedures need to work reliably across batches.
The challenge is to grow without losing sight of what made the original idea worthwhile: making cannabis beverages that people genuinely enjoy drinking. That’s the part that matters most.
The production equipment, formulations, testing, and packaging are all means to an end. The end is a beverage with a flavor worth coming back to, made with the care and consistency consumers deserve. And when all those pieces come together, the finished product looks deceptively simple… can, a little fizz, a flavor you enjoy.
A whole lot of work you don’t have to think about.
The Bottom Line: Great Drinks Are Made, Not Magicked Into Existence
The next time you crack open a cannabis beverage, take a moment to appreciate what went into it.
Someone developed the recipe. Someone worked on the flavor balance. Someone figured out how to incorporate cannabis into a water-based drink. Someone made sure the production process was consistent and the finished product met the appropriate quality standards.
It’s craft, science, and a fair amount of trial and error—all working together to create something that should feel refreshingly uncomplicated.
At Magic Number, we’ve always believed that cannabis beverages should be about more than what’s printed on the label. They should be about flavor, quality, and the simple pleasure of having a good drink.
Because the best part of making a great beverage isn’t the machinery, the formulation, or even the clever recipe.
It’s the moment someone takes a sip and says, “Damn, that’s good.”
That’s the magic we’re after.
Craft brewed. Cannabis infused. Made in Bend, Oregon. Cheers.
